Like the perfect Tetris game, the pieces came together just perfectly in this project. Now I adore a great living room packed with gorgeous furniture, but there is something so satisfying about maxing out the measurements to give the feeling that the space has quadrupled its capacity.
The kitchen may well be the heart of the home, so that makes the pantry a critical blood vessel that can make or break the flow of this critical space. This home houses a growing family with hardworking parents we can’t play around here- we need that fully optimized flow and function!
We saw a collection of pre-fab pieces trying their best to keep up with the product volume. Most of these shelves and systems come in predictable increments of measure, which is fine if you have a perfectly square, evenly spaced area to work with- but that’s actually a pretty rare occurence. We knew we had to go custom here!
And here’s the behind the scenes action you really want- me with my print outs and a big vision.
And we got straight to the math. We measured their major appliances to make sure that the shelves are the perfect size to hold them. The floor plan has a jut out on one side of the wall. We decided to lean into that shape and make that the deeper section for the appliances, and allow the long narrow wall to be the snacks and bins area.
Here’s what we drew up:
Very grid-alicious. I know. I helped with the math, but this isn’t super impressive on paper. The table saw is where things got spicy. And so, the assembly began! We chose high-quality plywood that we doubled up for a heavy duty support system. A sleek face frame would serve to cover up the cut edges.
We chose Benjamin Moore’s Corriander mixed to 75% strength. I worked with my local paint rep to find the perfect product with an enamel-like finish for this room. If you’ve ever seen a hungry teen tearing into the snack bin, you know this whole room needed to be ready to take a beating- but be elegant while doing so.
And I think we made that happen.
There is seriously SO much space here. Not an inch was wasted.
The top shelves were fixed which we knew was fine because we measured their bins and containers beforehand. And I liked knowing I could lock in some symmetry on that broad span. The lower shelves are adjustable to allow for some movement.
Even though this is a utilitarian space, I had to add in some special details to elevate the look and your mood in this room- and who doesn’t smile at the glimmer of gold and the cool touch of a marble cheese board?
Look at me, I can’t keep my hands off these sweet baskets.
At the end of it all, they were so pleased with the outcome. We knew we maxed out the space and created a highly durable room that was very nice to look at. Snaps for Jimmy and his glorious craftsmanship.
