Valentine's Day is tomorrow, which managed to get me in a sentimental mood. Probably the best romantic writing I have done was for my vows. We knew we wanted to write our own, and both were so happy that we did. Hearing our own words and thoughts and wishes made a special moment out of this world magical. And looking back, I do take a little pleasure knowing there was not a dry eye in the room at the end of it.
Below is what I had written down and is very close to how they were delivered. I remember changing one or two words here and there as I was speaking out loud, but you'll get the idea from what is here.
Remember, wedding vow writing + support is one of the fabulous services that I offer!
Jimmy, I am so full of love and gratefulness to be standing here with you today.
My life has become so full with you. You know what I have faced in my past- life wasn't always easy. Many times when I needed comfort or reassurance, I would read Psalm 107. It talks about people facing trials and being delivered from them time and time again. The visuals of their experiences always seemed to mirror my own journey- both the heartache and the joy.
I first met you at a time when I was searching- trying to find the right job, a group of friends and something to be a part of. It came with challenges and I wasn't always confident in myself. The Psalm says, "Some went out on the sea in ships...a tempest stirred up and lifted high the waves."
We started as friends and it became clear that we could be more. My nervousness about giving in to a relationship came off as hard to get. But you were patient. Something told me that it was ok- that I could trust you. And so our love began to grow.
During our trip to Scituate last Summer, I remember being at dinner talking and laughing with you and I was overcome with a profound feeling of peace and joy. I am the happiest when I am with you. We decided to walk out to the lighthouse at the end of the town's harbor. As we walked by the calm water watching the sun set, I continued to reflect on how thankful I was to be with you.
The Psalm says, "He stilled the storm to a whisper, the waves of the sea were hushed ans he guided them to their desired haven."
Under the lighthouse that blinks 1-4-3 for 'I love you' you asked me to marry you.
When you graduated from the academy, you wrote me a letter acknowledging that your career could make things tough for us at time. I promise to love you through it all. I will celebrate your victories. I will comfort you in your losses. I will always listen when you need to talk. When you come home from protecting others at work, I will protect our home by keeping it full of peace and love. I will always be proud of you, because you do what is right and care for others. I will keep my heart open to you and always let you in. I vow to make every effort to give you the safe haven that you have given me.
